Calvin and Hobbes Memories...

For the last few days I've gone through my collection of Calvin and Hobbes comic books and I must say I can never really get tired of those. I don't think I've ever read a comic that so vividly depicts a child's (or indeed a grown-up's) imagination. If it were up to me, I'd choose this as the best funny comic of all time. Seriously, it deserves praise all the way, both for its brilliant and creative drawings, charming characters and the unique and wacky dialogues between the two heroes.

Shame we don't have more such comics around.

Well, okay there are a few... but nothing quite as good (save perhaps some of the classics such as Peanuts or Garfield).

Defending the Comic Collection

Certain older members of my household wanted to throw away my old and cherished collection of super-hero comics. A full-scale, indoor family skirmish almost broke out, but fortunately things soon settled down when I waved my steady paycheck all over the place. I was like "Look, here, I earn my keep, so shove off! The comics are going nowhere, they are collector's items and have tremendous geekish sentimental value to boot."

The matter was resolved swiftly and all thanks to my job.

Thor The Movie

Okay, I'm just trying to establish if this is accurate... and, I'll be damned it is! Kenneth Branagh is going to direct the Thor movie, with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Tom Hiddleston as Loki and freakin' Rene Russo as Frigga.

Fair enough, Kenneth Branagh may take a more classical approach to the whole story (provided he doesn't get too carried away like he did with Hamlet). His involvement could actually be a good thing considering his style of movie-making and the type of story-telling we see in Thor comics. It's the cast that worries me. Although I'm still not 100% sure if the cast list is official, I have to say that many of these actors and actresses simply aren't suited for the characters they are supposed to portray (possibly with Hopkins as Odin being the only real exception).

Time will tell.

Thor The Video Game... Would Be Awesome

Now, let me see if I could pick a comic book that would make an interesting video game... Hmm, that's gonna take some pondering, because a lot of superheroes and comic books have already made the transition to the big screen (and of course to consoles and the PC). Still, many comics are can still make decent video games.

Well, Thor, for example, is an interesting character. Although I'd sooner make a video game out of it than a movie, but I guess it's already too late for that one, seeing as the movie rights have already been snatched. Not sure when production will start, albeit I'll wager every comic-obsessed geek would sooner play a video game based on a comic directly, rather than have Hollywood vomit all over it.

The end.

Superhero Flicks

Movies... No matter how much I enjoy movies based on comic book heroes, the whole superhero thing is starting to get on my nerves a bit. Never in my nerdish existence have I yearned to see a flick based on Green 'fucking' Lantern. Fair enough, you never know - it might turn into a decent action film. Although with all the superheroes charging across the big screen right now, it just doesn't seem possible people will go insane all of a sudden and crave Green Lantern (boy, that's gotta be the stupidest name for a super hero ever).

Anyway, I'm also concerned about the movie adaptation of Thor. The comics were always there to keep me company when I was a kid. Come to think of it I enjoy reading Thor comics to this very day.

In all fairness, I'm having a tough time imagining Thor on the big screen.
